With nearly 100 innovations having already been announced by mid-September, Pollutec Horizons has confirmed its position as the trendsetting industry platform for innovative environment solutions.

The major trends that are already becoming apparent confirm the development of the market and reinforce the relevance of the new direction of the show, namely the focus on materials and energy, renewables and the combating greenhouse gases. These will receive considerable support from the programme of technical conferences.

A few examples illustrating the variety of innovations:

In the treatment of air pollution innovation continues to focus on VOCs (volatile organic compounds) with specific new solvent activated carbons or an energy saving system of cryocondensation using gaseous nitrogen. The need for information continues to be important here in the light of the large number of companies that were still not complying by the 2005 deadline. Alongside this, the range on show, the expertise and the conferences featured as part of the new Photocatalysis Village (manufacturers of TiO2 or lamps, applicators,…) will allow the contribution of this technology to be measured in numerous sectors, including building (interior air) and health. The question of health is also the linking element in new equipment for the treatment of dust and particles (vesicle removal, systems for capturing dust in working environments, decompression filters,…).

In the field of sound nuisances, which are also covered by the regulations governing health threats, new protective systems are appearing (helmets, absorbent materials, noise reducing wall coverings), whilst the performance of measurement systems is constantly improving.

In the treatment of water pollution, the innovations notified to the press office again confirm two trends noted in 2006: reduction of sludges at source before spreading, and new methods of conditioning. The optimization of biological reactors in terms of energy consumption is another point to note.

The decontamination of soils is mainly marked by the evolution of existing techniques. The pace of innovation experienced in the field of treatment in situ reflects the desire of the sectors’ professionals to master these complex phenomena and to adapt to surroundings: polluted soils are treated directly on site without being first removed and then returned or carried away to specialist centres, which is a considerable advantage in urban situations.

The waste sector is in the process of moving on to a new stage: even if collection (containers, skips, trucks) has reached maturity. Innovation is now focused much more on the extraction of energy from organic waste (cf. the growth in the numbers of innovations in the fields of methane generation) and recycling. As such, this justifies the decision to devote an entire sector of the show to the optimization of resources.

Energy and climate change are now major presences at Pollutec Horizons and have a sector of their own devoted to renewables, energy saving and combating greenhouse gases. In the field of renewables and new sources of energy there has been a growth in gasification and methane generation, which confirms the trend in 2006 relating to biomass. In relation to energy saving, the “sustainable building” sector is growing vigorously with, in particular, insulators (thermal ceramic coverings to reduce thermal bridges), control systems and solutions allowing the management of fluid networks to be optimized. Systems for locating leaks are appearing for both compressed air and refrigerants, allowing excessive energy consumption to be avoided and rises in greenhouse gases to be prevented. In the area specifically relating to combating greenhouse gases, new equipment for measuring or capturing CO2 is appearing on the market, along with specific services (transport and geological storage of CO2, compliance with “Factor 4” target contract, …), reflecting the sector’s growing maturity.
